Lewiston Public Works Department announces sewer pipe project

Process creates minimal street disruption

Lewiston, ME - The City of Lewiston announced today that it will rehab over seven miles of sewer pipe on portions of nearly 70 streets throughout the City. Lewiston Public Works' Water & Sewer Division (WSD) will manage the project and has chosen a procedure that involves minimal street disruption, can finish project by the end of the day, and ultimately will build new sewer pipes.

Kevin Gagné, Deputy Director of Public Works, City of Lewiston explained that municipal sewers are extremely important to help keep the environment safe from flooding, among other things, by safely transporting waste water to the waste water treatment plant. "A municipal sewer pipe is something people barely notice," Gagné said. "We'd like to keep it that way and this project will help us accomplish that by rehabilitating older pipes. Plus, this project allows us to continue to provide to homeowners virtually uninterrupted sewer service."

WSD performs camera inspections to evaluate the condition of the pipe and based on those inspections, WSD will cover a portion of the following streets in this project:

WSD chose New England-based company, Insituform, on this project, which involves installing a “cure-in-place” liner inside the existing pipe.  Lining a section of pipe is not only typically done in one day, but also with minimal street disruption. Insituform will be installing the material through manhole openings in the roadways which may lead to minor traffic delays. To know when a project commences, homeowners should look for the big truck that say "Insituform" on its side and Insituform plans to notify homeowners.

After each sewer pipe is lined, homeowner's sewer services may be partially impacted due wastewater being blocked from entering the sewer. Insituform will promptly reinstate each building sewer service.

In order to prevent any potential sewer back-ups, homeowners are encouraged to reduce water and sewer usage while work is conducted on their street. Contractors will let homeowner know when to stop using water and flushing and when they may resume using water as normal.

On occasion, there may be a "glue like" odor. To reduce the chance of any odors, WSD encourages homeowners to add water to trap in rarely used showers, sinks and floor drains and to check that sewer cleanouts in the basement are capped.

Public Works expects the project to be completed by May 2023.

If you have any questions or problems the weekday from 8 AM to 3 PM, please call Lewiston Public Works at 207-513-3003 and after hours, please call the Lewiston/Auburn Communications System (LACS) at 207-784-6421.
